Hilarious comedy , one of the year's best!,
This review is from: The Dictator (DVD + Digital Copy) (DVD)
I bought this on release from HMV and was torn between the BR version at 18 or the exclusive HMV dvd version at only 10 with a bonus disc of extras plus standard digital copy and slipcase.
Well I plumped for the Exclusive Hmv 2 disc version, contained in the box was the theatrical version of the fim (80 mins) plus the extended version of the film (97 mins) plus various outtakes/deleted scenes and a Larry King interview on disc 1 , then on disc 2 you get more deleted scenes plus music video. You even get a Wadiyan banknote included which is a nice touch.
Well the film itself was hilarious, I was frequently laughing all the way through, Baren Coen plays a Dictator called General Aladeen, who delights at having people executed at the drop of a hat, who is overthrown whilst on holiday in NYC so ends up working at a local store.
The Film itself is not a mockumentary in the same vein as Borat, and the plot is very thin, but the gags come pretty thick and fast and there's a lot of hilarious sight gags as well, one example is a rogue bodyguard of general Aladeen who has some very interesting weapons at her disposal which she uses to kill!
The film definately seems to have been influenced by the 1st Austin Powers film, with its clever dialogue and interesting villains - so if you like that or Team America: world police, you will more than likely love this. And Baron Coen shows that he is one of the best comic actors in recent years, breathing new life into a comedy genre that had been virtually killed off with consistently god awful films from the likes of Seth "I'm just playing my unfunny obnoxious self" Rogen and Adam "I'll film anything and call it a movie" Sandler.
To sum up I really enjoyed it and who knows, like the Austin powers films they may turn it into a franchise which would be great.
