Please don't let the negative hype put you off an important game in RPG history!,
This review is from: Diablo III (PC/Mac DVD) (DVD-ROM)
I'm currently playing the 1.07 version of this and the majority of the issues of issues that people had early on have been well and truly sorted. That said the majority of those issues, in the first place, were in the minds of people who had been longing for this game for so long that their expectations were astronomical high and utterly unrealistic. In many ways a lot of people wanted Diablo 2 in HD with new story line more options. It's not, but, it in my opinion it is better, and being made better all the time. I love Diablo 2 lod and still play it. And this feels very naturally like a successor!
The gameplay is astounding, fun and highly addictive, the graphics are beautiful, the sound effects and visual effects during action are so immersive. The sight and sound of making contact with your oversized axe / fireball / arrow is second to none. The story is fun, old favourites return, as do evocative music from Diablo 1 - 2. New lore is fascinating - and there are surprises along the way. I've used the auction house, never to buy, only to sell in order to raise money for high level repairs but even that (often the most hated feature) is an ok addition for those who want quick progression without all the grind. And in any case the grind has been made better over the last couple of patches. There really is plenty of great loot to find! Finally, I love the achievements and the little ring of pleasure for doing some previously impossible is a real thrill, for me at least.
To sum up, my sense is that the negative hype is only in comparison with a game that was hoped for (and therefore) imaginary. Maybe that game will be made (Path of Exiles or Grim Dawn) but with Diablo 3 the ARPG bar is set vey high indeed and I doubt will be bettered until the hoped for Diablo 3 expansion set is realised.
Give it a go...
