This review is from: Queen Unseen (Hardcover)
I have got lots of books on Queen. I also have lots more books on the music biz from a wide range of artists. Before this book, did I have any books written by a 'roadie'? ...Er, no.
This could've been a nerd's-eye-view of touring:- how many shipping crates, how many metres of cable, a minute-by-minute dissection of a live concert performance, blah blah blah...but it ISN'T and thank goodness for that!
Instead we get first-hand anecdotes of life backstage, onstage and around the Queen-related universe, and it's absolutely terrific reading.
'Ratty' is someone that any Queen fan will have heard of. He rose from gear-humper to Freddie & John's personal PA and head of the road crew and thus was one of the inner circle for many years. Here, we read first hand experiences of the sex, the drugs and the rock'n'roll (all of which were indulged in vast quantities) that was the Queen machine for a dozen years from 1974 to 1986 - 12 years when they were arguably the biggest band on the planet.
Peter Hince's style is the most readable you will have encountered. You will smile on every single page, you will laugh out loud every few pages, and you may, like me, finish it in less than 48 hours and yell out for more!
This is the best book I have EVER read about 'being there' - simple as that. Buy it NOW!
