A Short History Of Nearly Everything Greek..............,
This review is from: The Ancient Greeks For Dummies (Paperback)
I have never been a huge fan of the 'dummies' series partly due to not wanting to be seen reading one in public in the same way 'How To Win Friends and Influence People' was read in virtual isolation. However, having been continually embarasssed by my lack of knowledge of ancient Greece, and indeed Rome I happily purchased this book (from amazon mind) and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Batchelor has an excellent style of writing and an excellent way of combining fact with "not taking this too seriously" humour which puts me in mind of Bill Bryson - history has become a page-turner! It's a fun read and currently a coffee table "dip into" book - quite a sought after accolade in my flat. Why, this evening I'm going to do Oedipus (that's me saying that not old Ma Oedipus, see -I'm learning!)
This book will have wide appeal. From well, dummies like me - although I prefer the term "secondary modern education" to students, scholars, visitors to Greece (although I fear that the average vistor to Faliraki won't be packing this next to the primark wear and Heat magazine) and parents trying to get their kids interested in this sort of thing.
Well worth a read - highly recommended.
