This review is from: How to be a Better Parent: No Matter How Badly Your Children Behave or How Busy You Are (Paperback)
We all buy parenting books when our kids are little and then forget about the whole idea of seeking advice when they grow out of the toddler stage and stop trying to drink bleach or fall out of trees. But the fact remains that parenting only gets harder as kids grow up as older kids seem to be able to talk their way out of just about anything.
Cassandra Jardine's book is a wonderful, well-written book aimed at the parent who wants to bring a little bit more structure to family life without sacrificing warmth, humour and the "family discussion". She points out that kids of all ages need to be trained - they can't just learn good table manners, for example, by being shouted at day after day. In a simple, non-preachy manner, the author sets out a series of 17 steps to achieve a happier, more organized family life. Even though my kids are sulky teens, I'm already finding that her methods work. And I found some of them useful in dealing with my 87-year old dad! I only wish the publishers had the good sense to attach a pencil to this book so I could have underlined the best bits for easy reference. I heartily recommend this book to anyone with children - it gives you confidence for doing what must be the hardest but most important job there is.
