This review is from: Mansfield Park (Audio Go) (Audio CD)
I had the same technical problems as other reviewers, but Frances Barber is absolutely superb and I will be purchasing a complete copy (12 discs) with a working disc 4 to listen to again. She is so good at the voices - both male and female - and all are distinct so that it is easy to tell who is talking. Mrs Norris grates - but then Mrs Norris is meant to grate - she's a most unpleasant person. The subtle undertones of humour are pointed up without overdoing it so that you enjoy the little ironies of character and dialogue.
Lindsey Duncan in Pride and Prejudice had an easier task, in that she got Austen's best loved book. She reads it well, but Frances Barber takes a less well loved book and does an even better job. I thoroughly recommend both. Its a pity that the production values of "Pride and Prejudice", including the replication of the cover art on all of the disks which was a nice luxurious touch, have not been extended to "Mansfield Park" as it would have been good to have a matching set.
