Fantastic album let down by recording/mastering,
This review is from: Morning Phase (Audio CD)
I won't actually review the album as if you're a Beck fan you already know it's great, and up there with 'Sea Change'. Unfortunately for me like so many recent releases it's let down in places by 'brick wall' compression/limiting, either in the recording or mastering process, causing distorted sound and limited dynamic range. (the latest Pixies album is another offender) This might not be a big deal for your average smartphone listener but it's a shame for those of us who enjoy listening to a well-recorded album on good equipment. Hopefully record companies/artists will start to notice these poor-quality recordings and do something about it soon.
Anyway, the songs are great, it's just a shame about some of the sound quality.

Totally agree - its such a shame when they slaughter the sound like this. When that drum kicks in on 'Waking Light', it should be building to a crescendo, but instead its distorted and flattened and sounds absolutely horrible. I wish they wouldn't do this....
