A Complete "Get you started" PHP manual,
By A Customer
This review is from: PHP Fast and Easy Web Development (Fast & Easy Web Development) (Paperback)
What can I say? This is the second book I have read by this author (the other being "PHP Essentials" - ISBN 0-7615-2729-X). "Php Fast and Easy Web Development" is quite different from "PHP Essentials" in that it is aimed at the new PHP user.
But don't let that make you think there is nothing in it for the developer who is somewhat familiar with PHP. I am not a PHP expert (or else I wouldn't be buying books on the subject!) but I have used it a fair amount.
However - I like this book because it leaves nothing out. So many books assume things or annoyingly miss out crucial bits of information so that you end up having to buy half a dozen books to fill in the gaps. Well this book is unique as it supplies all you need to know in a step by step, blow by blow easily understandable method that many other authors and publishers could learn from! Because of this, you will find that some pages seem to be stating the obvious - this doesnt worry me - I just skip over it until I find something that I didnt know! Besides, this step by step approach reinforces the learning process and removes the guesswork element so evident in other books!
In summary, I think this book is amed at relative beginners in PHP, but it is useful to everyone unless you are an expert already. "Php Fast and Easy Web Development" provides an ideal way to learn or improve your PHP (or to get your misunderstandings explained).
It also has some very usful software on the CD including of course a copy of PHP4, Apache etc (Windows and Unix versions).
So it is worth it for the convenience provided by the CD alone! And at its current price - you can't lose!
I can only suggest that developers keep an eye on this author's work - you won't be disappointed!
Finally - for all you cynics out there ... No, I am not a friend or relative of the author, I am just impressed with her work. I don't know her at all, although she was kind enough to answer a PHP query for me by e-mail!
