Interesting but sad,

This review is from: Victorian Villains: Prisoners from Newcastle Gaol 1871-1873 (Paperback)
I found this book very interesting but sad. It gives a glimpse into the lives of Newcastle's poor in the Victorian era. All are petty criminals whose only real "crime" is crushing poverty. Their photographs add to the poignancy and we see them as individuals - most with gaunt faces and hopeless expressions, condemned to harsh punishment, including hard labour, irrespective of age or gender. The real crime is that, for them, there was no other way to survive.
