This review is from: Rogue Warrior of the SAS: The Blair Mayne Legend (Kindle Edition)
I bought the book on the basis of the many positive reviews, and looked forward to learning all about one of my heroes, Blair Mayne. I found the book quite a heavy read, a great deal of detail on various skirmishes that took place, which may be perfect reading for those who are into such minute detail but which I found a bit tedious.
Mayne comes over in the book as a great soldier, but a man who was unsuited for anything else in life. I realise this is an accurate summary of the man, but a lot of his personal traits as described are particularly unflattering, notably the heavy drinking and a violent nature, particularly when directed at civilians in the post-war period.
If you want the story, warts and all, and the in depth description of fire-fights you'll enjoy the book, but if you're after a lighter read, then think again. Just my view, of course, and I realise I seem to be in a minority based on the reviews thus far! Also I found the add-on section by one of the authors relating to Mayne's sexuality a bit unseemly and of no particular relevance.
