It's not often that I'll buy an album before I've heard a single note of it but in this case the pedigree of the artists was enough to make me shell out.
Between them Humphreys and Brücken were responsible for some of the most interesting music of the 80s and a collaboration seemed almost guaranteed to produce memorable results. Almost.
"Instead" is a very nice album - almost too nice. With the exception of the stomping "Have a Cigar" (a Pink Floyd cover apparently) it stays in a smooth, chilled-out groove that's sometimes a bit too "Radio 2" for its own good. At times it sounds frighteningly like a Teutonic Dido - if you can imagine such a thing.
I'd certainly recommend this album - there are no duff tracks and, despite its shortcomings, it's still better than almost anything in the charts. I just wish they'd been a bit more adventurous.
