2012 edition. Import only. Don't pay a small fortune!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Back Hand (Audio CD)
Reissued for 2012... but still import-only, courtesey of Universal Music Japan. I warn buyers outside Japan not to pay a fortune for 'import' CDs! Unlike the 2006 edition, this disc is not packaged in a mini-LP sleeve, it's jewel-cased instead.
'Back Hand' was recorded during the same October 1974 sessions that produced 'Death and The Flower', one of the group's most celebrated albums. Like that record, percussionist Guilherme Franco complements the regular quartet of Jarrett, Charlie Haden and late greats Paul Motian and Dewey Redman.
The album kicks off with 'Inflight', an in-your-face bop-'em-up that would likely upset Wynton Marsalis. 'Kuum' catches the group in one of its primeval-sounding world music explorations. 'Vapallia' is gorgeous, lyrical and played with that 'elastic' feel that was a trademark of this band. The title track finale is a sweet, loosely-played bop affair.
'Back Hand' is livelier than the meditation of 'Death and The Flower' but it's just as compelling. That these diverse albums were born out of the same recording sessions bears witness to the creativity of this amazing group.
1. 'Inflight' - 2. 'Kuum' - 3. 'Vapallia' - 4. 'Backhand'
All compositions credited to Keith Jarrett

Mr. D. Bain says:
For anyone looking to purchase this album or indeed any of the 'American quartet's' albums on the impulse label, which include 'Death and the Flower', 'Byeablue' 'Bop-Be' and 'Treasure Island' it is worth checking out a new 2014 release called 'Keith jarrett, the Impulse Years'. It is a 9 CD box set containing all 8 albums recorded for that label ( 'Fort Yawuh' is a 2 CD album). The set also includes numerous alternate takes and previously unreleased tracks, and is currently (at the time of writing) selling at the bargain price of just over £22.
