Hyperdub label's 10 year anniversary compilation - Round 1 of 4,
This review is from: Hyperdub 10.1 (Audio CD)
A sign I'm getting old, but I'm still recovering from Hyperdub's 5 year compilation. How have things moved on? Well - that's a tricky one to answer on the strength of this collection alone, since it intentionally focusses on the label's dancefloor releases. Those out of left field artists such as Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland and Laurel Halo aren't on here, presumably to feature on a later volume (I hear 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 are to follow). "10.1" does have the sense of the Hyperdub label having become sonically more well established and to that extent it lacks the raw excitement of Hyperdub 5. That said there are some real corkers on here - some new, some previously released. Label mainstays Burial, Kode 9, Ikonika and Cooly G all feature together with Detroit's Kyle Hall and the recently departed DJ Rashad from Chicago (RIP) and, as they say, many more.
The 2 CD set comes in a rather nice spot-gloss fold out digipack though there are no sleevenotes or artist pictures which is perhaps a shame, though this label is generally known for its minimal style.
If you're looking for a bang up-to-date dance music compilation then Hyperdub 10.1 is the one to buy.
