4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting range of short stories, 10 Aug 2013

This review is from: No One Can Hear You Scream (Kindle Edition)
The 5 stories in this collection are each interesting in their own right, ranging from a murder mystery in Roman Britain, through a story of deceit, treachery, and trickery surrounding the Gunpowder Plot, to three much more modern tales of murder, nasty political chicanery, and creepy human possession - or is it?

The writing is, as ever, of a very high standard, and confirms Michael Jecks as extremely talented - and not just in his usual field as the creator of the 14th century Sir Baldwin Furnshill and Bailiff Simon Puttock. The story used as the collection's title, 'No One Can Hear You Scream' is a very good twist on a usual tale, and also particularly interesting because it shows how circumstances in Investigating Officers' own lives can influence how they view a crime - something I've not seen quite so clearly indicated in any other such writing. 'A Case of Identity' is not only a chilling tale in its own right, it makes a number of valid criticisms about levels of surveillance and restrictions of freedom in modern Britain - including what should be the very disturbing fact that 'The power to arrest and hold men and women, uncharged, returned for the first time in four hundred years'.

This is a powerful collection of stories, but does not contain a single mention of either Sir Baldwin or Simon, so be prepared to open your eyes and mind to Michael Jecks' imaginative writing outside that particular comfort zone.
