The ultimate stocking filler?,
This review is from: The Singles Collection / The Songs of Ray Davies: Waterloo Sunset (Audio CD)
My brother has always been useless when it comes to Christmas presents and initially I thought this was going to be no exception! This is a rare instance of him proving me wrong. Like most people I could recall a few of the 'classics' etc but was amazed at how many others there actually were. The Kinks must surely rate along with the Stones and the Beatles as the groups of the era and without doubt Ray Davies was a master observer and social commentator of the period. He could compose damn good tunes as well! They are timeless. What a massive influence the Kinks have been even if some have not realised it. All in all a great compilation without the usual dross and space fillers that so many more modern groups feel the need to stoop to. I have to admit though that the Ray Davies disc has never seen the light of day and probably never will, so I suppose judgement on the Ray Davies disc is likely to remain as rare as rocking horse manure. Regardless of this 5 stars is truly deserved and the Kinks are a vital part of music history. Though considered highly improbable if the human race is still around in 100 years they will still be singing these tunes.
