A good laff,
This review is from: Le Donk [DVD] (DVD)
If Somers Town and This Is England were some of your favourite British films from the past few years, as they were mine, then don't place your expectations too high for Shane Meadows' latest shoestring charmer: an invective-addled slice of backstage ego-baiting. Paddy Considine is Le Donk, a self-serving rock roadie for whom the pseudonym Le Prat would be better suited. He carts around rotund rapper Scor-Zay-Zee, completely ignorant of his talent. Once a number of hilarious faux documentary set-ups involving Donk's pregnant ex-girlfriend are touched upon, we begin to sympathize with this loser, just before Scor-Zay-Zee hits it big after a chance recommendation from the Arctic Monkeys. Whether you care for Le Donk doesn't matter. Occasionally endearing but always funny, his reminiscence about a sexual encounter with a hermaphrodite is pure gold. Lo-fi by comparison to Meadows' previous work, but still good.
I want to give this three and a half stars but Amazon won't let me, so I'm feeling generous as I know there's still many great films to come from Meadows yet.
