Kim Stanley Robinson has always been a big canvas writer but some of his other series get bogged down in social commentary. 2312 manages to avoid this problem and delivers his best book yet, a landmark novel that give us a fantastically nuanced view of the future at the macro and micro scales.
His future is full of big science - space travel, terraforming, longevity treatments, A.I, ecosystem collapse & nanotech - but he blends this sense of wonder with a look into mankind's inner life. Humans are still very much human 300 years from now but extended lifespans have changed social mores. 2312 is at it's best when it looks into the inner life of it's Mercurial and Saturnian protagonists and their attitude to work, family, friendships and love.
Science Fiction is always really about the present and KSR extrapolates now into a book that resonates on every level - a Booker nomination would not be amiss.
