An entertaining, tense and fast paced action film,
This review is from: Safe House [DVD] (DVD)
You know that a film with Denzel Washington is going to be acted, on his part, very well and Safe House is no different. This time round thought, Washington isn't the nice guy who sets out to stop an explosion on a cruise ship (Deja Vu) or to stop a runaway train (unstoppable) instead he takes on a bad guy role (of sorts) playing a disgraced CIA agent who sells his countries secrets to the highest bidder. Once again Washington is brilliant and his scenes put the others actors sharing them with him to shame. However, the film's other main actor, Ryan Reynolds does a pretty decent job too, playing a safe house operative who gets tangled with Washington when a raid is carried out on the safe house he manages. Thus follows a mad dash to evade capture by those trying to kill Washington so that Reynolds character can deliver him to his superiors, aprehending Washington and, he hopes, get a promotion because of it.
The direction is good, not great, sometimes being too hectic to effectively capture the action sequences. However, on a whole the action is portrayed well and there are some great stunts and exciting chase sequences. It's reminicent of a Tony Scott film, both in terms of directing style and action. And so, if you enjoy Tony Scott's films or you like a great action film that isn't just empty thrills and set pieces but has some good characterisation and brilliant acting then Safe House is a perfect choice.
In terms of extras this single disc dvd offers a short 'making of'that doesn't go into great detail but does offer some level of insight into how the film was made.
