3.0 out of 5 stars Like their last album, without the kick...., 23 Oct 2007
This review is from: Pull the Pin (Audio CD)
Stereophonics have come a long way in 10 years. They haven't always been able to pull off what they attempt - listen to 'JEEP' and 'You Gotta Go There to Come Back' for numerous examples - but musically the brothers Jones have matured and developed considerably since 1997's debut 'Word Gets Around'. The real question has to be whether this is a good thing or not. To the average musician out there, the songs are more cleverly constructed these days, but to the average listener they perhaps lack the excitement of tracks like 'Local Boy In The Photograph'. 'Pull The Pin' sees the Welsh rockers stick largely to the same formula as used on their previous record 'Language Sex Violence Other?'. This record, however, lacks the flair and punch of a 'Dakota' (current single 'It Means Nothing' sounds similar, but with the stuffing knocked out of it) although the opening track does feature a riff that 'Vegas Two Times' would kill for. There are a couple of gentle moments for those who prefer the softer touch of Kelly's voice, namely 'Daisy Lane' and 'Bright Red Star', but the better parts of this record occur when the guitars are loud, and when the scrawl that first made his voice so distinctive is in evidence. Nothing to get too excited about here, but nothing as bad as 'Have a Nice Day'.
