I have used this to good effect. I was confused when a repeated clogging problem with one tube was evident.
If clay is hard and lodged inside the tube, just pushing the hole clear is not going to fix this. The Tube has to be clear of clay!
Once cleared and made clean all was working well. This brings be back to the type of soil. On my garden some area's are damper than others with more clay mix in some parts, hence the difficulty I had.
The build quality is good.
I am a heavy strong adult and could push the tool into the soil as required. My big 15 year old son not fat like his dad had difficulty reaching a good depth due to his weight disadvantage.
I made a plug retrieval box with an old cardboard box and sticky tape. You do not have to retrieve the plugs of soil however my grass is near my back door. I did not want the children treading mud into the house.

Mr. A. P. Brooks says:
Thanks I am thinking of buying this item and as I have a small lawn it seems to be the answer as I have recently changed the lawn from a patio and needed a "quick fix" but the ground underneath is more compacted than I though (serves my right).
So I will be busying myself with this in the early autumn.
