Black, Gloomy Performance,
This review is from: Schubert: Winterreise (Audio CD)
My word this is tough going if you are not in a good mood! This recording from 1955 has a very high reputation and the mono sound has been remastered to a perfectly acceptable degree. But, Hotter sure sounds miserable - apt for the work, I suppose.
Lieder is not normally quite my cup of tea, but I was able to pick this CD up for £5, so I have given it a go. Winterrise needs no further coment from me, but this carefully sung performance must have been authoritative 53 years ago when it came out on an early LP. Hotters deep voice is apealing and, as is always the case with EMI "Great Recordings of the Century", the CD is beautifully presented with brief notes and full texts in German and English.
Perversely enough, I think the piano accompniament from Gerald Moore is the most appealing part of this moving musical experience.
