Great series - don't let the nerds put you off!,
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series [DVD] (DVD)
I was initially rather skeptical of this series, not being a fan of po-faced and self-important sci-fi series like the Star Trek franchise or the trying-too-hard-to-be-quirky dullathon that was Firefly. However, Battlestar Galactica is simply great television, successfully erasing most memories of the horrid original (shiny, disco robots and repetitive space combat sequences).
BSG retains the original premise: Earth like planet is destroyed by pain in the arse mental robots, humans go on the run in a wagon train in space. Layered on to this simple premise are numerous religious allusions (the Cylons appear to be Christian-leaning, with their one true God, whereas the humans have pre-Christian polytheistic tendencies), political democracy versus military survivalist conflicts and perhaps most dramatically, a story line whereby the Cylons become a 'benevolent' occupying force and the human resistance fighters become terrorist insurgents, using suicide bombings and assassinations.
Some of the characters in BSG are terrifically portrayed (the Commander and his number two, the President, the utterly nuts scientist chap), though perhaps too many of the human survivors appear to be twenty-something Californians (yes, I realise that some are English). Special effects are faultless and there's a well-handled mix of personal drama with that epic space shooting stuff.
Finally, my wife is not a fan of science fiction, much preferring The Sopranos and The West Wing (me too) but she loved BSG. No doubt, this series will gain the attention of those dullards who take this type of thing far too seriously but don't let that put you off: BSG is simply a great series.
