This review is from: You Gotta Go There To Come Back (Audio CD)
The Stereophonics had a difficult job to follow their previous album, Just Enough Education to Perform. You Gotta Go There To Come Back continues much in the same vein as the previous platter - lots of punchy rock interspersed with ballads. Notable highlights for me are the stonkin' "Madame Helga", which I expect will be used in the action scene of at least one Hollywood Movie, and another great song is the harmonious "Nothing Precious At All". There are interesting arrangements of brass in "Climbing the Wall", and overall I'd have to say that this album has a slightly darker tone than "Just Enough Education to Perform" or "Performance and Cocktails".
If you liked the previous albums, then you'll like this. My only complaint is that it doesn't quite match up to "Just Enough Education to Perform", but that's a hard act to follow.
To me, the Stereophonics at this point in time are the definitive sound of the current Rock scene, much as the Manic Street Preachers were a few years before. If you're alive, you'll have this in your collection.
