Can't put this book down!,

This review is from: Venice (Paperback)
I purchased this book because I am due to take a trip to Venice in the Summer. It won't be my first visit, in fact I have been twice before, although not for a few years.
I've seen loads of Guidebooks on this much-written-about city; and thought I knew all there was to know; but I was wrong!
What I love about Jan Morris' book is that it's a very personal view; neither a series of dry historical facts, or a guidebook, as such, although it is a bit of both these things.
I knew the author lived in Venice for a while, which no doubt helped a lot. It's really Venice as the Venetians see it (even though, truth be told, there aren't many of them who actually live in the city of their birth anymore, which is really sad.)
Her insights into what makes both the city and its' inhabitants tick are fascinating; and it's also very well written. Jan has a technique of making long, descriptive lists of things: I particually liked the one about the Fish Market!
In short, I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is going to Venice, dreaming about going there; or is just curious about this unique place.
