Possibly THE greatest performance by a British Boxer!!,
This review is from: Calzaghe vs Lacy [DVD] (DVD)
Just to make it clear, I have NOT seen this DVD as it has not been released at time of writing but I did see the fight live.
I'm going to be very careful in what I say here...I can't say that it was the greatest fight of all time, as it was hugely one sided, and to be a great fight it needs to be at least a close contest...but I'm a big boxing fan and I have got to say that this was possibly the greatest performance over 12 rounds of any British Boxer...ever.
If Lacy had been billed as a 'warm-up fighter' contender then this fight would not have been exciting, it was the fact that he was billed as 'The new Mike Tyson'...'The greatest current US fighter pound for pound'...even in the UK Calzaghe was behind Lacy in the bookies.
Finally the night came, we were forced to endure several 'support acts' before the Joe/Jeff fight, one of which included another excellent welsh fighter Enzo Macarinelli (sp?), which was a good fight...normally I would reagard it as an excellent fight, but it was eclipsed by what was to come! (we had to wait until about 3am for the main attraction because the british TV companies were catering for the American audience!!), the fight began and Calzaghe had a great first round...it was fantastic to see but it was difficult to NOT think that this was a lucky round for Joe...don't get me wrong I'm a great JC fan, ever since he floored Eubank in the 1st round, but all the hype was very much in Lacy's favour...but then Calzaghe went out and totally dominated the 2nd...and the 3rd...and the 4th. By this time Lacy was bleeding in several places and looked awful....5th, 6th, 7th...has Lacy even landed a punch? He's certainly tried, but Calzaghe seems to know Lacy implicitly and manages to read his mind so he's countering everything Lacy throws. This was the same story for the whole fight!
There are PLENTY of one sided fights...and a one sided fight is usually boring...but this one was an exception, it was PHENOMENAL!! At no point did JC sit back and think he was definately going to win...he kept boxing all the way to the end, he out moved, out boxed, and out classed Lacy.
I have only been on this earth for 25 years, and I've watched many classic fights on video, but in all my life this fight most definately ranks in my top three fights ever...of course if you are a Lacy fan this opinion will not apply to you!
I've ordered this DVD for it's release date, it's a fight I will watch over and over again, there has NOT been a performance like this from a single boxer in recent years whatsoever.
