One to borrow,
This review is from: An Armchair Guide to the "Cure" (Paperback)
Considering The Cure's long and successful career there are surprisingly few decent books on the band. Most are average and only a couple are very good.
I picked up "In Between Days" from the local library and thought I'd borrow it rather than buy after reading a couple of terrible reviews on the American Amazon site. Those reviews slated the book citing numerous typos and a few mistakes. But is it that bad?
Well in a nutshell it lists all the Cure singles, albums and bootlegs giving release dates and behind the scenes info. Most Cure fans know all this already but where it gets interesting is the commentary and the quotes. I've read a lot about the band and still own a number of magazines dating back years with interviews and features but even I hadn't seen some of these quotes before. Some of them are from past members who are rarely interviewed such as Lol Tolhurst and Michael Dempsey so it was nice to hear their views on the early years.
What lets the book down is that occasionally the author's commentary is hard to agree with. I appreciate music is subjective but there are a few lines that I felt were ridiculous such as when the author implies that when Lol left he took the talent away from the band. This suggests he was the mastermind behind the music and not Robert. Then he suggests that the "Presence" album is a better record than "Wish".
The other problem is the mistakes that crop up. The author says that Robert's sister married Lol when in fact it is actually Porl Thompson. He gets the name of the Banshee's drummer wrong too. It makes you wonder whether there are other mistakes elsewhere.
It's a fairly quick read and if you're a fan it's worth reading just for the quotes from the band members but it's let down by some of the commentary and the mistakes. The best Cure book remains "Ten Imaginary Years" but that only takes you up to 1987. We really need a good Cure book that brings us up to date!
