A wonderful release of timeless soul music,

This review is from: Philadelphia International: 40th Anniversary Box Set (Audio CD)
There are already excellent reviews for this boxset at Amazon at the time of writing. Due to confusion over which version of a single was used a reviewer gave the set one star which does not represent my own enjoyment and appreciation of the set.
The sound quality is excellent, the selections go beyond the obvious and it is clear that care has been taken to get this right. A fair proportion of the tracks are unavailable on CD until now and others such as those by Bunny Sigler sound far better than early CD releases.
I have listened carefully on good quality headphones and the sound is clean with good detail and separation but avoids the clinical harshness, compression or over amplified volume of some modern CD releases. A good balance then for warm music made prior to the digital era.
I recommend this set greatly and frankly almost anything on Philadelphia International Records. We may not see the like of this CD set for much longer so I and others will treasure this music. It sets a standard and I wonder if the same could be done for Salsoul and Prelude.
Most of all it allows a deep and extended enjoyment of this positive, heart lifting music. They made it this way because they wanted to hear it themselves and this dedication shows.
Many thanks for all the great work, I'm off to enjoy a beer in the sun with the perfect soundtrack.

Thanks for mentioning the sound quality. I'm curious if you also have the U.S. 4 cd box set "Love Train: The Sound Of Philadelphia" or 4 disc "Philadelphia International Classics: The Tom Moulton Remixes" box set? I'm seriously considering purchasing all 3 sets and especially if sound quality is excellent!

I have both of these. It is worth getting all of them. The Love Train set isn't quite as perfect in sound as the 10 CD set, but it's still fine. The Tom Moulton remixes has particularly good sound quality too - same people as the big box set. Any soul on Expansions label or involving Ralph Tee is normally excellent in sound quality as he seems to take care on the releases.
