This review is from: Aliens vs Predator 2 (PC) (Video Game)
From the moment I first played the original AvP I was thoroughly hooked, and this latest instalment is a incredible improvement on a game which was already first class.
The story is intelligent and surprising, offering a three way perspective on the events that unfold, each character thread showing you another piece in the puzzle of LV1211, and the three species have each been gloriously brought to life. The threads are each longer than they were before, and the range of specialisation in each type of species gives it longevity and good character, especially in multi-player, where there are game types such as Evac and Hunt which pay homage to the films.
The addition of the life cycle of the aliens into the game was well executed and played fantastically. The creature is as deadly as ever, a snarling nightmare of claws and snapping teeth that can tear human opponents limb from limb in less than a second, and vanish just as quickly into the darkness. The sound effects are perfect, immersing you thoroughly in the role, and you are rewarded for clever thinking and ambushing your enemies from unusual angles, with a satisfying (and nourishing!) head bite on your unsuspecting victims.
The marines are great, all of the weapons look, sound and respond fantastically, and again I found myself scared witless when the motion-tracker picks up movement, and something dark and very deadly scurries gracefully across the ceiling towards me. Short controlled bursts are a nice idea, but are easily forgotten! The shoulder mounted lamp is a godsend for those dark corridors, adding nicely to the (sometimes incredibly) tense atmosphere, and several times I yelled in surprise (and held down the trigger) as the game caught me off guard. If you remain calm however, the pulse-rifle turns out to be your best friend - a dozen rounds can cancel an alien's cheque for good if you can get it in the head.
The predator is awesome. The spear-gun is one of the most useful weapons in the game - it doesn't give you away/drop your cloak and you can retrieve your spears from the bodies of your enemies. The plasma-caster comes a close second with the targeting available from each of the vision modes, enabling you to take down multiple targets in quick succession. The cloak gives you a satisfying edge over your heavily armed opponents, and often they're standing right in front of you, and they can tell something is wrong but it takes them a fatal few seconds to work out they're in mortal danger.
The graphics are top notch. The sound is incredible. It plays like a dream and you'd better be prepared to be very afraid. Fox Interactive have done it again, but this time, they've done it better.
