This review is from: Gold Dust (Audio CD)
Tori Amos's new association with Deutsche Grammophon is clearly bearing
rich fruits. 2011's 'Night Of Hunters' found her exploring new sonic territory
with the integration of a chamber ensemble to frame her inimitable voice
and beloved Bosendorfer piano. With 'Gold Dust' she takes a further step
towards recreation and consolidation with a collection of fourteen songs from
her back catalogue arranged for full orchestra by herself and John Philip
Shenale. It is a wonderful collaboration. I am reminded of Joni Mitchell's
two peerless reinterpretations of her past glories in the late Autumn of her
career : 'Travelogue' (2002) and 'Dreamland' (2004), where orchestral versions
of some of her finest compositions gave new depth and resonance to her muse.

That Ms Amos has not made some of the more obvious choices available to her
in her selection of material is to her credit. She has clearly given careful
thought to which songs would benefit from revision and elaboration and the
results are truly stunning. Both her voice and piano playing have rarely
sounded better. There is both restraint and grandeur evident in the new
arrangements which highlights, to a degree greater than we always knew, what
a fine songwriter she is. Numbers such as 'Jackie's Strength' (surely one of
her loveliest compositions) from 'From The Choirgirl Hotel' (1998) positively
glows with acute new-found pathos; so too the delightful account of 'Winter'
from her 1992 debut 'Little Earthquakes'. For my money, however, the sublime
rendition of 'Marianne' from 1996's 'Boys For Pele' is alone worth the price of
the album. Ms Amos has rekindled the past with both grace and clear vision.

Highly Recommended.
