This review is from: Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season 6 (Box Set 1) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Plenty of people have been ragging on season 6, saying it's been dark, uneven and unfocused. However, in various interviews with writers and such-like, it's clear that 'the dark place' is where they wanted to take the show this year. It's not the Buffy we loved 3 years ago, but it's still Buffy. And by god, is it good.
The explosive two-hour opener really sets the scene for much of what's to come. From Buffy's unreal sense of reality when she returns, Willow & Tara's bickering over her use of dark magicks, and Xander & Anya's in-out-in-out again relationship, it's all here. The Troika are a wonderfully comic invention, and you would try very hard NOT to laugh at their antics in this boxset (of course, they get more threatening later on, but that's in boxset 2). Dawn's whining does get on your nerves after a while, but stick through - the rewards are fast coming.
Obviously, the highlight of this boxset is the musical, 'Once More, With Feeling'. It's one hour (well, 45 minutes actually) of pure genius. Each character has their own little moment, meaning you get to see into the heart of everyone. 'Tabula Rasa', the follow-up, is BtVS comedy at it's best: every line from Act 2 to the beginning of Act 4 is uttered with such a knowing mock-tone of voice that you can't help but laugh. And there are plenty of in-jokes to keep the avid Buffy fan amused (Willow telling Dawn she thinks she's "kinda gay,", Anya's attempts at doing spells constantly producing bunny rabbits, etc...). The only problem is that the show hits a dry-spell after that. The next episode, 'Smashed', is good (Amy's back - yey!) but after that, and for a few episodes after, it turns into a soap opera. Good if you like your 'Eastenders' and your 'Dyansty', but not in Buffy (at least, not all the time).
So get this boxset, marvel at the opening, LOVE the musical, laugh at Tabula Rasa, and then wait till the other boxset comes out.
