With a book like this you have to always bear in mind the prejudice of the writer. However, this account of the events surrounding the coalition negotiations, told from inside the Labour camp, is fascinating in its analysis of the Lib Dem strategy and in the picture it paints of the Labour party at the time. It points to the key decisions made by the Lib Dems at the time that have shaped this government as essentially Tory, rather than a coalition.
I am sure it is generous to Gordon Brown, but Andrew Adonis writes in a very accessible style about the inner workings of government in a scenario that hasn't arisen often in British politics to date. As a fan of Borgen (Danish coalition government TV drama), some of it was surprisingly familiar.
To gain some balance, I should probably read the equivalent account by David Laws... but I am not sure I will!
