5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT HISTORICAL REFERANCE, 9 Oct 2009
This review is from: The Lost Mansions of Mayfair (Hardcover)
I can't decide weather the above reviewer gave this book 1 star because it has 'black and white' photo's as a joke or not. This book is a very well researched and fascinating document of a mostly vanished part of London. Since most of the buildings described disappeared over 50 years ago, it is hardly surprising the photos are black and white. This isn't a tourist guide book. Instead it details dozens of buildings, street by street, area by area, giving details of architects, a history of each property and the owner's names. It's a fascinating insight into how an area of London went from being the most fashionable residence of nobility, to 'new money', to it's rapid destruction in the early 20th century as trade and commerce moved in, and finally to something of a renaissance in the 21st century. I found it absolutely fascinating. Researched with a real passion, and lavishly sprinkled with black and white photos.
