1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality dvd, 10 Jun 2011

This review is from: The Lacemaker (1977) Region 1,2,3,4,5,6 Compatible DVD. A film by Claude Goretta a.k.a. 'La Dentellière'. Starring Isabelle Huppert, Yves Beneyton... (DVD)
I have waited forever for this film on dvd as it is one of my favorite films. I decided on this version because it is region free while the upcoming release appears to be region locked. While this dvd is an improvement over my faded 30 year old VHS copy. It is not that much of an improvement with the quality of the dvd being about that of an average VHS copy. While not unwatchable the dvd quality is poor. I hope to someday purchase this film on Blu Ray or a well mastered DVD so I can finally retire my faded VHS copy.If you love this film this region free dvd is probably not what you are looking for.

Thanks for your review. I still cherish my VHS version and the film when I saw it at age 18 38 years ago had a profound and lasting effect on me. I was hoping for a great remastered transfer using the VHS translation. How sad to fall short after such a long wait. Oddly it is rarely on television where my hopes of recording it were the next best thing. A film of its time for people of that time in many ways. Huppert was simply stunning.

I saw this movie for the first time in 1978 when I was 20. I fell in love with the film and purchased it at a high price as soon as it became available on VHS. The Lacemaker was released by Criterion on LD but never made it to DVD.I agree with you about Huppert who became one of my favorite actresses thanks to this film.
