Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Pale King (Paperback)
I'm 200 hundred pages in and I'm going to give up. One of the most tedious books I have ever (tried) to read. Quite why anyone thought to write this book and quite why anyone ever thought to laud it as a mastepiece I cannot understand. It's about nothing - it's a catalogue of the mundane interspersed with very brief periods of interest (so a bit like normal life in that respect). It only qualifies as a 'book' because someone thought to print it, bind it and put an RRP on it, in every other way it fails to live up to the word. I've learnt nothing from the time I've put into it and I don't care about any of the people being written about, but most of all I have no interest in turning to the next page and reading any more, so. I. am. stopping. now.

Well done Chivers on getting 200 pages in.Foster Wallace is one hard writer to grasp,i will say though Pale King was not really a finished work and not at all the ideal starting point. But saying that i get the feeling a lot of reviewers don't tell the truth when reviewing Foster's work, the worst ones are the people that start trying to use long words in an attempt to appear as intellectuals.I think you may be onto something when you said about the book being like life.So i respect your review for its honesty.

Perhaps you've missed something then? Is this the first DFW you've read? If so...it most likely wasn't the best place to start. His writing is difficult to grasp.
