You pay your money and you take your choice - but there are many arguments for saying the 'long' 19th century, the period between the French and Russian Revolutions, was the most intense in history. Of course, it may seem that way because it is fairly recent, has left much of itself for study, and is so obviously home to the thinking and tensions that underpinned the 20th century's deadly experiment with totalitarianism. The series of essays edited here by Blanning provide an expert but always readable summary of the ideas, hopes and failures that still resonate in the 21st century - and all in fewer than 250 pages. First Class.
