This review is from: At the Hairdresser's (Penguin Specials) (Penguin Shorts/Specials) (Kindle Edition)It's a long time since I've read anything by Anita Brookner and I'm pleased I've renewed my acquaintance with her work through this short story. Elizabeth Warner lives alone in a basement flat and only ventures out to shop and to have her hair done twice a week. But her life is about to change when she meets someone at the hairdressers.
This is a gentle story which still packs a punch as it explores loneliness, friendship, trust and betrayal. Brookner's writing is as ever subtle yet crisp with exactly the right word used for every circumstance. I like Elizabeth as a character and she has few illusions about herself. To me it was clear she would survive whatever happened to her and would learn whatever lessons life put in front of her.
An enjoyable and thought provoking read which has made me want to read more of this author's novels.
