Having that particular problem, i have been reading quite a lot on the subject but i found this book much easier to read and really helpfull. It explains in a simple way how self harm works and what steps recovery needs. Although the book certainly helps more along with psychotherapy, I would recommend it even for those that choose not to have a therapist. It may also help family and others understand the situation and the mind of the "patient" in order to be more of a help to him/her. Personally I bought it also as a gift to my therapist as it very simply expresses thoughts that I haven't been able to vocalize.
