Haunting and powerful production of 'Rigoletto',
This review is from: Verdi : Rigoletto [DVD] [NTSC] (DVD)I sat down to watch this with a friend who didn't know much about opera, and we intended to stop for a break after Act One. Instead we watched the whole thing straight through, too gripped to stop. It is absolutely mind-blowing. I saw the live-from-Mantua version, and have watched them side by side, an act at a time to compare them. This one is more bold, original and absorbing, in my view. As the other reviewer wrote, Diana Damrau is absolutely superb. Her singing grows in power as her character matures from terrified girl to tragic heroine. I thought Sparafucile suitably sinister, clad entirely in black. The interpretation of the quartet near the end, where the Duke embraced Gilda as he sang to her, was certainly unusual, and I felt it suited Juan Diego Florez's personality. He can't really be evil! He sang with his customary brilliance. In all, an absolute bargain at this price.
BTW, all opera dvds I have bought have been NTSC but they will play here, if the dvd player is reset from PAL to NTSC - a bit of a pain, I agree, especially if you forget to change it back again afterwards.
