4.0 out of 5 stars ., 13 Feb 2003
This review is from: Mary Star Of The Sea (Audio CD)
In certain ways I prefer this record to anything the Pumpkins did. Sure I would give Siamese Dream five stars over this four, but that is because the grandeur and indulgence of the Pumpkins is not as overtly present, and that pomp was what made certain pumpkins songs so great. Maybe that was something to do with the SP's chemistry, which is a funny thing for me to say as I always thought SP was in many ways Billy and some backing musicians, but I think I was wrong. The elements of Mary star of the sea that resemble the Pumpkins are transfered obviously by Billy's songwriting and Jimmy Chamberlain's unfaultable and innovative drumming, but to say this sounds like the Pumpkins is like saying mixing blue and yellow is the same as mixing blue and red, laugh at that if you will, but the only way i can hear pumpkins is if you separate the elements out mentally. This is a different entity, and the fact that Mr Corgan has thrown his talents into a mixing pool with four other egos suggest a release of past problems, and yeah this record is happy. Some of the unabashed joy of this record in my opinion emanates from the fact that all these musicians seem to have been given a new lease. This is a band that can obviously jam well, and feed off each other from the evidence of live stuff i have seen, and although some people may suggest with reason that these songs are repetitive, the fills and chord structures and fresh, they grab your ear. I think Dave Pajo's guitar style has a lot to do with this, and like many others I will now be looking into his past projects, and also Matt Sweeney's. Overall the reason I am starting to love this record is that it seems that every song was written for its own sake, which is something i felt was occasionally absent from pumpkins records, I'm glad Billy's been given this chance. I think the fact that the overindulgence in themes and concepts has gone leaves a band enjoying each others inputs, not trying to proove anything. When I first heard of Zwan and read up on the backgrounds of the other musicians, I feared that they would be so artistically specific that they would be innaccesible to most including me, I'm also glad this is'nt the truth.
