Ellroy's depiction of the 1960s hit you like a hammer-blow to the 'nads. At first, I found his use of underworld "patois" a bit off-putting. As I read on, his use of very terse slang-filled sentences augmented the visceral cruelty of the world he is describing; giving the reader a bleak poetic description of the horrors that lie just beneath the surface of what we consider civilized society. In the Ellroy universe, those shadowy figures that wield the true power exude an evil that will make any sane man s*** himself, should he come face-to-face with it. Even hardened hit-men are not spared!
