It pains me to give this 3* as i loved the first book. There are quite a few flaws in this book and i feel that J.L Bourne has lost sight of what made the original great: the sense of isolation and impending doom. He introduces far too many new characters all of which are under developed and at the half way point of the book you are left feeling almost no sense of danger. The author also goes nuts with the weapons, don't get me wrong we all love 'the gear' aspect of post apocalyptic fiction but again the author loses sight of what makes it great. We want low ammo, jammed weapons, not enough weapons etc. However he goes in the opposite direction and introduces miniguns, tracking turrets (a la Aliens special edition) and lazer targeted 5000lb bombs, boring. All of these flaws are nothing though compared to his biggest mistake, in that he has chosen to develop the 'zombies are getting intelligent' plot line. This is a terrible miscalculation as i do not think any of the audience wanted him to go in this direction, zombies win through attrition and weight of numbers, they cannot think or reason and that's what we love about them, why mess with this? The last 4 pages of the book also indicate that he wants to explain the outbreak (very badly), why? I don't want to give away the plot so i won't go on.
In conclusion, if you loved the original then i would still say buy this as its not awful but be prepared to be somewhat disappointed. I will still buy the third one when it comes out but i won't be pre-ordering and counting down the days like i did for this. Such a shame.
