2.0 out of 5 stars Diminishing Discs?, 14 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete Series 3 Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
First, I must state that the Sarah Jane Adventures are all superb and may many more be produced. My two star rating is based upon the DVD prodcution and not the wonderful series and deserves 5 stars . . . The concern I have is that with each new release, the number of discs have diminished as well as the extras . . . Season one had 4 discs, season two had 3 discs and season three has only 2 discs. It seems that the production company has elected to produce lower quality, long playing, discs as well as eliminate most of the extras. The consumer once again is extorted. If we could only say no and not purchase their products perhaps they would get the message although, I seriously doubt they would modify their marketing strategies . . .

I don't have the sets yet, but I'm wondering whether earlier sets were supplied on DVD5, and later sets on DVD9. That would account for fewer disks containing the same amount of uncompromised data.

I bought series 3 and 4. Each of them comes on 2 DVDs. Each DVD has between 6 and 7 GB on it. That's good news IMO. What you really don't want to see is DVDs with 4.37 GB on them - those are usually compressed a lot to fit on a single-layer disk and you risk getting artifacts. Anyway, I watched a few episodes and the image quality seems fine.
