Not quite what I expected - but . .,

This is a marvellous film that sets you thinking and talking.
I was expecting more in the way of a regular "late period drama" with a formulaic theme. I'd forgotten about Poliakoff's flair and gift for amazing twists and hidden shadows.
The performances are superb - and hardly surprising really. Romola Garai is excellent in the lead role as Anne - but with the likes of Bill Nighy, Christopher Lee, David Tennant, Jenny Agutter, Julie Christie et al; she is never alone!
The film sits on a bed of sinister intrigue and weaves a tangled web of curious agendas as Britain moves towards war.
I am in no doubt that it is a film that demands more than one viewing - it leaves more questions than answers.
Highly recommended; a truly thought provoking film.

I have to jump on thi smini band wagon.
I don't quite know what I expected (it was recommended to me) but it delivered.
I agree with this reviewer - plenty of twists and I was drawn in fearing for Anne.
An excellent film.

I'm only sorry it took so long to get to see this wonderful film. I thought it was superb and your review is spot on. I borrowed it from the library but am keen to watch it again too so may have to buy it. Worth more than one viewing.

Could not disagree more.
Poliakoff is a genius.
as most critcs seem to agree this is his nadir.
But all of us earnestly want to love anything he does.
Despite that I simply cannot understand these 5 star reviews.
"I am in no doubt that it is a film that demands more than one viewing - it leaves more questions than answers"
does that mean it is thought provoking or simply rambling and inconclusive?
I'm perplexed that it can be heralded when not understood
It has definitely divided opinion but it begs the question when even those who give it 5 stars confess to being left confused, is it a case of being dazzled by the Emperors Newest Clothes.
