This review is from: Radio Head: Up and Down the Dial of British Radio (Paperback)
This book is undoubtably an easy read and gently entertaining as the main character "John" - not sure if author or an invented character - takes his mind off a boring job by listening to a radion station each day (a great concept) and gets to meet/interview some of his radio greats. Certainly, it is interesting to explore British radio but by doing so within a story of a persion who has a boring working day left me confussed - there seemed to be no conclusion to "John's" lonliness or bordedom and the office characters were merely sketches with no depth. I wonder if the book would have worked better without the pretence of a character who was using radio as a means to ease his drab life? Certainly, when he interviews real life characters like Mark Radcliffe he never says he is researching a book (which is what he presumably told them) and therefore the interviews seems to "come out of the blue" - would Radcliffe really give his time to a fan who wanted to have a friendly chat? I also found it hard to picture John, lonley, no g/f but with friends who invited him out and it was hard to get a handle on how old he is - at one point he mentions being in his twenties and at another point is dob seems to be 1971 which would make him 35 or 36 - the book being set in 2007. An easy read though on the train or on a summer's day in the garden so recommended.

Not sure if you're interested John is a real person, he was in the year above me at college so would make him 27/28
