A brilliant short story!,
This review is from: The Perfect Murder (Quick Reads) (Paperback)
This book was published as part of the BBC's Quick Reads campaign, which encourages adults who don't read often, or find reading difficult to pick up a short story and discover the joys of books, which I think is a great idea.
As a keen reader, I wasn't in the target audience so found it very easy to follow, and read the whole thing in one sitting. I hadn't read anything by Peter James before, so 'The Perfect Murder' was my first introduction to his work. I would now very much like to read his more famous and lengthy novels, as I have no doubt I will be in for a treat when I do.
As for 'The Perfect Murder', I enjoyed it from the first page, and despite the title, found it very funny in most parts. The plot is a simple one, so I'd imagination that it will be fairly easy for new readers to be able to follow, and when the unexpected twist comes at the very end, the author cleverly concludes with something that took place at the beginning.
'A Perfect Murder' is set in Brighton, and centres around the Smiley couple, who were once very much in love, but as the years have gone by, Mr and Mrs Smiley have grown to despite each other, something which only deepens more and more each day. Whilst the husband has murder in mind and Google's 'poisons' at work and home, little does he realise that the wife, along with her lover, is also plotting a killing of her own. I immediately took to these two characters, sympathising with both, and was entertained by each of them.
Beautifully written, engaging and very entertaining. The twist towards the end of 'A Perfect Murder' reminded me of the old Roald Dahl 'Tales of the Unexpected' TV series. One small criticism is that I do think that the book could have been just that little bit longer, there would be more room for character building and certain situations could have been expanded on, but I really did enjoy it and thought it a steal at just £1.99. If your looking for a good, quick bedtime read - you've found it!
