4.0 out of 5 stars Great baking book!, 9 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Hairy Bikers' Big Book of Baking (Hardcover)
With so many baking books around these days, I was wondering if the Hairy Bikers could produce something really interesting in the area.
Well they did, and I was particularly impressed by the savoury selection which is often underrepresented in recent baking books (but don't worry, the sweet selection is good too).
A travelogue -a lot of international recipes + background anecdotes- as well as a cookbook in typical Hairy Bikers' style: enthusiastic, friendly and heart-warming, if you like the boys, you won't be disappointed!
However, I nearly choked on my chocolate cake when I came across the Belgian Pizza recipe (also called Tarte Flambée, Flammekueche/küche etc...), not because I am a purist defending pizzas as Italian/Italo-American but because, although the HB probably came across it in Belgium, the flammekueche is a well-known Alsatian speciality. Some German villages might also claim it as their own (given the history of the region) but Belgian, no way!
Beware lads, you will be on the Brotherhood of Real Flammekueche's hitlist in no time (and yes, there is such a thing :-)):La Confrérie du Véritable Flammekueche d'Alsace)! Still, you are right Hairy Bikers, the flammekueche is much better eaten with a Belgian beer (I will soon be n°3 on the hitlist if I carry on).
So, all that to say that I suspect there might be some other inadequacies in the background information as collected by the HB, but it is no big deal if your main interest is the recipes themselves as the book is a great collection of international baking specialities (both sweet and savoury).
If you have a sweet tooth, check it out -or check the list of recipes in the "Look Inside' feature- to see if the balance of sweet/savoury recipes is up to your expectations but all in all I would agree with the previous reviewers and rate this as a very good baking book.

Your knowledge is impressive.
I approached this book purely as a baker and greedy pig.

In reply to an earlier post on 13 Mar 2012 14:13:08 GMT
Well actually my knowledge is not that impressive, I am another greedy pig who just happens to be French -born not too far from the Belgian border- and to have Alsatian friends who would also choke on their chocolate cake/Flammekueche (or choke someone?) if they knew... I actually found the mistake quite funny, wonder if I will dare tell them ;-))
Love the book though!
