This review is from: Annie Hall [DVD] (DVD)
Apologies to Woody Allen fans out there but in my opinion Annie Hall is the most overrated film ever. It beggars belief how this could win awards and receive so much acclaim. The only possible explanation I can give is that in the 1970s it was something new, but looking through the prism of the 2010s it sure as hell has dated quite badly!
Don't get me wrong I'm not a Wood Allen hater, I loved Sleeper - really clever, surreal and whacky comedy that had me in stitches of laughter all the way through...but this...this just left me feeling like committing a violent act...The Alvy Singer character is pathetic, irritating and self obsessed...and maybe that's the point of him...but then to top it off the dialogue and `jokes' for me were not remotely funny...instead they were cringeworthy, contrived and totally unnatural in their delivery...
The whole film seems to be trying way too hard to be clever and ends up coming across as not remotely believable in characterisation and plot...What makes modern day `neurotic comedy' like Curb your Enthusiasm/Larry David so effective is that it's also quite believable - you can imagine Larry's mishaps occurring in real life. The Alvy Singer character in Annie Hall is pure fantasy. Or maybe that's the point? Even so, not funny. Sorry.
