A slow burner,
This review is from: Saltbreakers (Audio CD)
I came late to the talented Ms Veirs, only discovering her a couple of years ago on the release of her previous (5th?) album "Year of Meteors"; which I played to death and is still one of my favourite albums of recent years.
So I was a bit disappointed with "Saltbreakers" initially as it didn't seem to have as many immediate melodies or hooks as its predecessor, other than the stand-out "To The Country" which is a thing of beauty recalling "Fire Snakes" but this time with a wonderous choral-backing arrangement as the hook. I have to confess that this year I actually found myself going backwards and listening more & more to Veirs's 2001 stripped back alt-country effort "Triumphs and Travails of Orphan Mae !"
However having given it further listening during the rest of 2007, "Saltbreakers" is still a good album; and I am eagerly looking forward to Laura's solo acoustic UK tour this winter 2008 !
