Splendid trip back in time to when Saturday's heroes were called Roy, Bobby, George, Colin...,
This review is from: Roy Mac: Clough's Champion My Autobiography (Hardcover)
You get a sense of so near yet so far from reading the footballing life story of Roy McFarland. As an England defender, he arrived just too late and so will for ever remain in the shadow of Bobby Moore. When his time did come, injuries and Poland got in the way. He might have lifted the European Cup with Derby County, but disgraceful events in the semi-final against Juventus in 1973 conspired against the Rams. Events in Turin all those years ago, graphically recounted here, also exposed a fallibility not usually associated with Brian Clough. McFarland was given a second chance – but turned down Clough and Nottingham Forest on their way to becoming kings of Europe for a second time. Roy Mac spans a career during which planet football changed beyond recognition – not necessarily for the better.
