A curate's egg,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I received this item promptly from the supplier and it was packaged effectively. Installation was a bit hit and miss and it took several attempts to get it to work. Does it work? Yes, it does but....it should be noted that the resolution it captures at is around if not lower than standard VHS which might be fine if you are simply copying old tapes but for anything like S-VHS, Hi8 or even DVD you will find this device seriously wanting. One major problem it has is that it will NOT work with the likes of Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas and seems to be designed to work only with Ulead products although the latest version of that software won't speak to it either. I experienced crackly sound that no amount of twiddling and messing about could cure. It is also not compatible with Vista or Windows 7 so it is somewhat limited in its scope. It should be understood that for video capture, there is no substitute for a good capture card but such devices are thin on the ground and those that do exist command very high prices.I bought this thing to use with my laptop for occasional use but alas, it was not what I wanted.
So, it works but not well. It is cheap, very cheap and seems to be reasonably well constructed for what is basically a copy of a well-known product but it is nothing more than a compromise. If you want to archive your old video collection, this will NOT enable you to get the most out of the source material. It will simply provide a slightly inferior, digital copy of your stuff. The end result looks more or less like an old VHS to VHS copy. If you would be happy with that, then fine.
One final warning note, when I discovered that the quality and compatibly was not up to scratch, I attempted to uninstall it and ended up corrupting my operating system resulting a major format job. If you install the drivers, make sure you set a restore point in Windows before you install it and remove the thing by going back to the point. This will save you a great deal of time and stress not to mention, loss of data.

I installed this on my laptop but was unable to get it to function so i wanted rid. I was going to uninstall this but your last paragraph worries me a bit. Is it worth the bother of uninstalling it or should i just leave it?

I think if I were you, I'd leave it on unless there are any problems.
